THEthe Condominium Theater of Gallaratededicated to the great Vittorio Gassmann, is at the center of a dispute that sees the actor opposed Alessandro Gassmann and the League mayor Andrea Cassani. Last Saturday the theater was the scenario of Remigration SummittheMeeting of the European ultra -right that has raised criticism especially for the proposal of extreme measures to avoid “ethnic replacement in Europe”.
Alessandro Gassmann, the request to the mayor of Gallarate
With a direct shared message on social media, Alessandro Gassmann expressed his dissent. «Dear Mayor, I read that in the theater entitled to my father in your town, it took place The international meeting of the parties of the far right European (new fascists and Nazis). If in his intentions there is to continue to host in a place of culture, manifestations with racist and illiberal slogans, I ask her to remove the name of my father from the aforementioned theater. My father had deported relatives and killed by the Nazi -fascists “.

The post, published among the Instagram Stories in the aftermath of the summit, reflects the personal bond of the actor with the family memory. But of course there is also the refusal to associate the name of the father to an event with openly xenophobic content. The request is not only symbolic. For Gassmann, in fact, the theater, a place of culture par excellence, should always embody values of inclusion and dialogue.

Andrea Cassani’s answer was not long in coming. In a message on social media, the first citizen defended the cultural identity of Gallarate, underlining the city’s offer. “We can boast four theaters, two museums and we are among the few cities not the capital to have a music conservatory,” he wrote. Regarding the event, then, he explained that “The fact that a cultural association of boys on the right has organized a summit by paying the room does not seem to me an affront to the figure of the great Vittorio Gassmann “.
The mayor praised Vittorio Gassmann, “man of eclectic culture who was never afraid of externalizing his political belonging”. And he stressed that he would prefer the comparison of ideas to the “aperitistic censorship”. However, Cassani has also opened a reflection: “This episode will certainly provide us with the starting point to review what the rules for renting public rooms may be”.
The granting of the theater to the ultra -right was a controversial choice. The first location hypothesized for the Remigration Summit, in a Hotel in Somma Lombardo, always in the Varese, had jumped because the structure had not confirmed the booking. And some commercial activities of Gallarate on Saturday decided to remain closed until the end of the Remigration Summit explaining, with signs posted on showcases or posts on social networks, which “we do not intend to serve the bundles”.
