After his serious injury, Aleksander Aamodt Kilde fought his way back onto the slopes. However, he will not be taking part in the Olympic Games.
Aleksander Aamodt Kilde declared his season over shortly before the start of the Winter Olympics. The Norwegian explained his reasons for the decision in an emotional Instagram post.
“Returning to the World Cup this season means more to me than I could have imagined a year ago,” wrote the 33-year-old. “Just making it back there was a victory I will always be proud of.” But he also learned that coming back from complex injuries was more difficult than he expected.
“Standing back at the starting gate next to the best downhill skiers in the world was a stark reminder that both body and mind must be fully prepared to push each run to the limit,” wrote ski ace Mikaela Shiffrin’s fiancé. “At the moment I need more reps to reach this level.”
Kilde also explained that his body needs more time than his head would like. That led to back problems, which is why he didn’t take part in the downhill run in Kitzbühel. The race in Crans-Montana was anything but easy for him.
“For this reason, I decided to end my season earlier than planned,” explained the 2022 Olympic silver medalist. “At this point, I have made my comeback. I saw the pace, felt it in my body and now I know exactly what it takes to get back to the top.”
It wasn’t his wish to end the season. “But looking back, I’m proud of what this return means. Still, I’m here to win races and right now that means planning for the long term.”
Kilde had a bad fall on the Lauberhorn descent in Wengen in January 2024 and was seriously injured. He cut off 80 percent of his calf muscles when he fell into a safety fence with his skis and also struggled with a shoulder dislocation. Later, the injured shoulder also became infected: Kilde suffered from blood poisoning.
“I’ve never had such pain before,” he said in a recent interview with “Kicker”. “I thought I was dying. There were days during all this long suffering when I wanted to tear my arm off.” He only made his comeback in December 2025.
