The current leader of the terrorist organization al-Qaida Aiman al-Zawahiri is believed to have been killed in an attack by US intelligence agency CIA. Reuters news agency reported this after a conversation with an American official. At 1:30 p.m. Joe Biden will give a speech.
Al-Zawahiri was allegedly killed in a CIA drone strike in Kabul, Afghanistan, on Sunday. The Taliban has not yet announced the death of al-Zawahiri, but has confirmed in a statement that an attack on Kabul has taken place. Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said he condemned it, calling it a violation of “international principles.”
President Joe Biden will address what the White House describes as a “successful counter-terrorism operation” tonight at 1:30 a.m. GMT. The White House has not yet confirmed al-Zawahiri’s death. There were no civilian casualties in the counterterrorism operation this weekend, according to a US official who spoke to the AFP news agency.
