“Ajax on the right track, but PSV wins in the Arena,” says Willy van de Kerkhof

PSV has come one step closer to the championship thanks to the win over Almere City and Feyenoord’s draw against Twente. A major bump awaits next week: the away match against Ajax. “That will be a wonderful match,” expects PSV celebrity Willy van de Kerkhof. “Ajax is well on its way, but PSV will win 3-2.” Brother René bets on 2-2. “Although we could just walk right over it.”

PSV achieved another victory against Almere after two disappointments, but Willy is still sad that Feyenoord has eliminated his club from the cup. “I didn’t see that coming either,” he says in the Willy and René Podcast of Omroep Brabant.

Willy no longer wants to talk about the infamous VAR moment when PSV did not get a penalty. René would like to say a few words about it: “It’s unbelievable that you as a referee don’t see that. I already wonder what the referees in the Netherlands are doing. They all seem confused.”

“Just get out.”

In the meantime, it seems that Yorbe Vertessen will soon exchange PSV for Union Berlin. “Just let it go,” says Willy. “Of course it is a shame, but we have enough choice and a dissatisfied player in your selection is not pleasant either.” And there is another PSV player on his way to the exit. “If Babadi had wanted to re-sign, he would have done so a long time ago,” says Willy. “Then he apparently doesn’t want to play for our club. Fine, just leave!”

However, he would like to see Joey Veerman return from his injury quickly. “Against Almere we only played with one midfielder. Hopefully Veerman will be there again against Ajax so that we can play again like in all those matches we won.”

Ismael Saibari will not be there for the time being because he is playing for the Africa Cup with Morocco. René follows that tournament closely. “Many of those players could better become actors! If they get a slap, there must be a coffin, because then they act as if they are dying.”

“Beautiful memories of the Meer.”

In the podcast the brothers also reminisce about their own away games against Ajax. “The matches in De Meer were especially fun. It was much more fun than the chilly Olympic Stadium,” René remembers. His duels with Ajax defender Wim Suurbier were famous. “Willem said before the match: ‘So Kerkhof, how long do you think you can last today?’ And then I said, ‘Well, at least longer than you’ and that was true because he usually didn’t make it to the end.”
