As an Ajax supporter you have to expect disappointments these days, but… a punishment of no less than 6-0 at AZ many fans did not see it coming. We spoke to a few today on Wibautstraat.

The disappointment comes in part because interim coach Fred Grim seemed to have things on track. Since the dismissal of John Heitinga, he only lost his first two games with Ajax (against Excelsior and Benfica). Six of the seven subsequent matches were won. Only the match with NEC ended in a draw (2-2).

‘Tadic era now feels like a long time ago’

“It’s raining outside too, this is totally my mood,” says a disappointed fan on this drizzly morning.

“Being an Ajax fan has been difficult in recent years,” says someone else. “The golden era with players like Tadic, those were times boy, it feels so long ago now! Yes, these are difficult times. But we have to persevere. It is still Ajax, it is in your heart.”

‘I turned it off’

A student we spoke to had not seen AZ’s last goals. “After the first half it was already 3-0. Then I thought: no, we better put this off and do something useful. For school, or something.”

The supporters who were there yesterday had to sit out the match. Trainer Grim and occasional captain Youri Regeer have promised those fans that Ajax will reimburse their tickets.
