Travelers at Schiphol are divided about the plans of the aircraft manufacturers. “As long as it has a good safety check, it’s okay,” reasons one woman. “But there has to be some kind of backup.”
Another calls the plan ‘a bit scary’. “I’m glad it hasn’t happened yet,” says a woman about to fly to Porto.
Future
Flying fanatic William Hölzel of Avanti Aviation, a Hoofddorp-based company that rents out flight simulators, believes that it will eventually happen. “Artificial intelligence doesn’t get sick, doesn’t have jet lag and doesn’t suffer from divorce,” he says.
The pilots’ union also certainly sees a future in which artificial intelligence will be applied. “The goal should only be to increase safety. We are absolutely not against that,” said Verhagen.
