Air traffic at Groningen Airport Eelde is at a standstill due to the dense fog. Due to poor visibility, aircraft cannot land or take off safely.
A TUI aircraft, which was en route from Schiphol to Eelde to pick up passengers on its way to Gran Canaria, was unable to land due to fog and returned to Schiphol.
The TUI spokesperson says that the airline will transport the affected travelers to Schiphol by bus. In the meantime, we are looking at how they can get to their holiday address as quickly as possible.
The TUI flight was the only commercial flight scheduled for today.
The training flights have also been canceled for the time being, an airport spokesperson reports. It is still unknown when this can be resumed.
The Mobile Medical Team (MMT) of the UMCG is also stationed at Groningen Airport Eelde. They also cannot take off with the helicopter due to the fog, says a spokesperson for the MMT. “We have to adhere to fixed criteria, so we cannot fly at the moment. The team is available, but they have to travel by car until the fog has cleared.”
The fog in Eelde will probably stick around for a while, says weatherman Gert Voerman. “Moist air entered the province last night and condensed. Because it is already November, the sun does not have enough power to evaporate the fog.”
Meanwhile, in South Drenthe it is a bright day with lots of sun. “It will probably clear up a little more towards the north during the day. But it is very questionable whether this will be the case as far as Eelde.”
