Agents targeted on social media after fatal shooting incident in Oupeye, mayor goes into hiding: man in his twenties arrested for intimidation | Interior

A young man in his twenties has been handed over to the Liège public prosecutor’s office because he had posted a photo of a police officer on social networks. He claimed it was that cop who shot the quad rider in Oupeye. The young man has turned himself in to the police, reports the court of Liège.

The photo of the 25-year-old officer was accompanied by the comments “Hide well” and “Let the news spread”. The agent in the photo has nothing to do with the facts in Oupeye, the Liège public prosecutor’s office said. The author of the message went to the police himself and confessed to the facts. He was deprived of his liberty and brought before the public prosecutor’s office. It is expected that he will soon be subpoenaed for harassment.

It is not the only police officer whose photo has appeared on social networks in the aftermath of the deadly shooting incident. Another police officer from the Basse-Meuse region was also targeted this weekend.

Mayor goes into hiding

The mayor of the municipality, Serge Fillot (PS), is also harassed. “A few days ago I was forced to move, I have been threatened and I am very tired. I don’t want to involve my family in this. My son was supposed to come and stay with me this week, but I told him to stay with his mother,” he says. The man feels that he is considered the one who ordered the police officer to shoot.

Last night it was quiet in the municipality. “We arrested a group of people around 11 p.m. and the police force left around 3 a.m.,” said Mayor Fillot, who noted that “the violence has subsided.”

Just like the previous days, the situation will be analyzed around 5 p.m. in order to evaluate the measures and adjust them if necessary. “We will not let our guard down,” the mayor assures.

The riots in Oupeye and nearby Herstal are the result of the death of a young man who was shot by a police officer on Friday afternoon. According to the Liège public prosecutor’s office, he drove a quad into an officer who had ordered him to stop, after which his colleague drew his weapon. The two agents involved will be questioned and committee P is planning an investigation.
