The Belgian Coast Walk has only gained popularity since the first edition in 2019. With over 11,000 participants, a record is therefore set again. It has grown in a short time into the second largest walking event in the country, after the Dodentocht.
Around 2,000 fanatic walkers started a trip of 80 kilometers in De Panne on Saturday morning between 4.30 am and 5 am. In the neighborhood of Nieuwpoort, the participants of the 60 kilometers connected, in Ostend the course of 42 kilometers starts and then the 25 kilometers in De Haan. The participants in the 10 kilometers start and finish in Knokke-Heist.
“We all discovered the pleasure of walking during Corona,” says Greg Broekmans of organizer Golazo. “It is also the most accessible way to exercise. That partly explains the success of our event. There is also something for everyone: there is a loop of 10 kilometers and whoever loves a challenge opts for the longer distances of 60 or 80 kilometers.” The course ran through forests, over dikes, past ports, through the dunes and over the beach. The course was slightly adjusted by a small dune fire in Bredene.
