Code yellow ends today at 12 noon, the KNMI reports. It will still be slippery in the morning and 1 to 2 centimeters of snow may still fall in the northeast. After noon the winter weather gradually disappears.

Slippery conditions have been a recurring phenomenon in recent weeks. Between Thursday, January 1 and Thursday, January 29, the KNMI issued a warning code for the northern provinces on no fewer than 21 days. This clearly had consequences, including for damage repair companies and hospitals in Drenthe.

Hospitals helped many patients who suffered broken wrists, hip fractures and head injuries due to the persistent slippery conditions. “It was not only busy in the emergency department,” says a spokesperson for Treant hospitals in Emmen, Stadskanaal and Hoogeveen, “but also in the radiology departments and in the operating rooms.”

FC Emmen was also affected by the winter weather. Due to the persistent cold, the turf in De Oude Meerdijk stadium had become rock hard. According to facility manager Jort Tenniglo, this made it too dangerous to play matches. The matches against Cambuur and Jong Ajax were canceled and will both be made up in February.

Today clouds and sun alternate and it will remain dry in most places. The temperature ranges from about 0 degrees in the north to 7 degrees in the south of the province.
