After her successful comeback on the WTA tour, Venus Williams can plan with the next tournament participation. The 45 -year -old former world ranking first receives a wildcard for the Cincinnati Open in August.
There she won her last single match in 2023 – until she defeated 6: 3, 6: 4 on Tuesday at the DC Open in Washington after her first tournament after a 16 month break. The day before she had already won in doubles and given her comeback on the WTA tour.
A year after Uterine surgery
Williams, the older sister of Serena Williams, had been operated on the uterus a year ago. Only one player was ever older than her in a win on the WTA tour, Martina Navratilova won in 2004 at the age of 47. “There are no limits for excellence. It’s about what is going on in your head and how much you can invest”said Williams after their first round victory.
“If you work mentally, physically and emotionally, you can deliver results. It’s not about how often you fall. It is not about how often you are sick or injured. If you believe and work on it, there is an opportunity.”
Looking at US Open
In Washington, Williams now meets the Polish Magdalena cheeky at number five. For the US Open in August, she reported with her compatriot Reilly Opelka, at least for the mixed tournament and was recently flirted with a possible start in singles, for which you would also need a wildcard.
