After the kissing scandal: UEFA chooses Rubiales’ successor

After Luis Rubiales resigned as vice-president, the European Football Union (UEFA) has chosen the Albanian Armand Duka as his successor. UEFA announced this on Tuesday after a meeting of the Executive Committee in Limassol, Cyprus. Duka (60) has been head of the Albanian association since 2002, and in 2019 he was also elected to the UEFA Executive Committee.

Former Spanish association boss Rubiales resigned from his UEFA post on September 10 after weeks of wrangling after he kissed national player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth without her consent at the award ceremony after the World Cup final. The incident sparked international criticism. The world association FIFA temporarily banned Rubiales, and the judiciary in Spain is investigating.

UEFA also named Warsaw as the venue for next year’s Supercup. The duel between the Champions League winner and the Europa League winner is scheduled to take place on August 14th at the National Stadium in the Polish capital. To this end, UEFA moved its congress and the Nations League draw from Madrid to Paris on February 8, 2024.
