After four months of coma, cyclist Amy Pieters is ‘awareness’

Cautious optimism around Amy Pieters. After four months of coma, the cyclist from Zwanenburg is ‘conscious again’, reports her SD Worx team. Pieters died in December while training on a bicycle and has been in an artificial coma ever since.

The team reports that Pieters can now “communicate somewhat non-verbally”. “Amy recognizes people, understands what is being said and can carry out more and more assignments.”

Pieters is known as a cyclist who combines road and track competitions. In 2014 she took her biggest road victory with the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad. In 2019 she became European champion on the road in Alkmaar and last year she took the national title on the road.
