The season is over for AZ, but behind the scenes, the Alkmaar club is busy with the future. Yesterday Maxim Dekker extended his contract and then Mees de Wit and Hobie Verhulst also put their scribbles under new commitments.
Mees de Wit’s new contract now continues until the summer of 2029. The 27-year-old left wing defender came over from PEC Zwolle in 2022 and played a total of 66 official duels for AZ. He often had to do it with a raid. He also knew the necessary injuries.
Outrage
Football Affairs Director Max Huiberts believes in better times for De Wit. “For the past two years he has had the ‘bad luck’ that he had two very strong competitors, with Milos Kerkez and David Møller Wolfe. The moment Mees does play, we see what he has in his march. It is up to him to perform that pressure and to be there from the beginning of the coming season.”

Culture carrier
The commitment with Hobie Verhulst has been extended to mid-2028. The 32-year-old reserve goalkeeper is seen by Huiberts as one of the club’s culture carriers. “It is a boy who has been involved with AZ from the start and has returned with a side step. A child from the club, who stands on the field with incredible passion and energy every day.”
It is the sixth time that Verhulst has signed a contract with AZ and that is a record at the Alkmaar club. This season the closing post never came into action. As the first goalkeeper Rome-Jayden Owusu-Oduro was injured, then trainer Maarten Martens opted for Jeroen Zoet under the Tellat.
