Two months after his cardiac arrest on the pitch, Tom Lockyer is dreaming of a comeback. “If there is a chance that I can play again, then I would love it,” said the 29-year-old Luton Town professional in an interview with the TV channel “Sky”. “But I won’t do anything against the doctors’ advice. It is far too early to set a time frame or make a decision.” His girlfriend is seven months pregnant. That is currently his priority.
The Luton captain suffered a cardiac arrest during the game against AFC Bournemouth in December and was taken to hospital after receiving emergency treatment on the field. “I was really lucky that it happened where it did,” said the centre-back. On the day of the incident, he felt no signs that anything was wrong. “It was a normal day, which is perhaps the most disturbing thing about it. I tried to find answers, but I was fine that day.”
It was the second incident of this kind for Lockyer. He collapsed in May last year and returned to play after a heart operation. After another cardiac arrest, he had a defibrillator inserted. “I can’t deny it’s been a tough few months. But I’m fine,” said the defender. “I am incredibly grateful to be alive.”
Lockyer played most of his career for Bristol City (284 times), and the defender played 16 times for the Welsh national team. Since 2020, Lockyer has been under contract with Luton Town, which is currently ranked 17th in the Premier League as a newly promoted team.
