He remembers nothing at all about the accident itself. Slik says that he had difficulty dealing with stimuli and that they also caused epileptic seizures. He also appears to have suffered a serious knee injury.
To make matters worse, he contracts a bacterial infection during the subsequent knee operation. He then has to learn to walk and cycle again. “The past six months have been the worst I have ever experienced. It puts you back down to earth and shows how vulnerable you are as a cyclist. An accident can happen in no time.”
On the way back
He has only really been back on the bike since October and has now completed two races. So he starts in Egmond on Saturday. “My goal is top fifteen, but secretly I hope for more.” Slik is therefore not one of the top favorites.
Last year’s winner is Ramon Sinkeldam. “A very nice competition with great participants. I feel good and am going for the win. I have retired as a professional, but I dare to say that I am at the same level as last year for a one-hour competition,” Sinkeldam looks ahead .
Sinkeldam has tough competition. Rick van Breda, Timothy Dupont, Tim Declercq, Daan van Sintmaartensdijk, Jonas Rickaert and Menno Don are also among the favorites.
