There was a lot of pressure on Ajax. This week a story appeared on ESPN. The gist of this was that from the start there was little support within Ajax for Heitinga’s return as head coach. “I was not angry, but disappointed,” Heitinga immediately starts the press conference about this.
There also seemed to be a lot of pressure on the team on the field. After three and a half minutes, former Ajax player Kristian Hlynsson gave the Tukkers the lead. FC Twente had the opportunity to push through, but failed to do so. The score was only 1-0 and that gave Ajax hope for a result. “We couldn’t get the pressure on,” says Heitinga about the extremely difficult start.
Dismissal averted?
At that moment Heitinga was on the edge of the abyss. Did he think he was going to be fired? “I’m not concerned with that. I understand the questions, because everyone is curious. But I’m only concerned with this competition.”
