It has been exactly 40 years since reactor number four of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant exploded on April 26, 1986. The disaster, caused by human error, blew a cloud of radioactive material into the atmosphere. These consequences were felt far beyond the borders of the Soviet Union. More than 120,000 people were evacuated. They left behind homes, belongings and memories – but also their pets. These animals leave their traces in the deserted area to this day.
