Pal Dardai is no longer in the service of Hertha BSC. The 49-year-old is leaving the second division soccer team and taking up a job as Head of Football at the Hungarian first division club Újpest FC. The Berliners announced this on Thursday afternoon.
Dardai was fired as head coach at the capital club a year and a half ago and most recently worked as a scout in Eastern Europe and brand ambassador.
Been with the club since 1997
Dardai came to Hertha BSC from Budapest in 1997 as a 20-year-old. He played for the club until 2011. During this time he played 286 games in the first Bundesliga for Hertha BSC – more than any other professional before or after him.
He then worked as a coach in the club’s youth academy. In 2015, after a short term as Hungarian national coach, he took over as head coach for the Berliners for the first time. His first term with the professionals ended in 2019. Two more followed, most recently from April 2023 to June 2024.
Dardai should become standard bearer
The club announced that Dardai should become the standard bearer for Hertha BSC. With this title, the second division team honors its greatest player and coaching legends.

Hertha managing director Peter Görlich emphasized that Dardai “enjoys the greatest respect of all Herthaners due to his services to our club. We therefore wish him every success in his new task.”
