After 17 years another Dutch player at Rangers: Sam Lammers signs a four-year contract in Glasgow | Transfertalk

Sam Lammers makes the switch from Atalanta to Rangers FC. The Scottish record champion records the 26-year-old striker from Tilburg for four seasons.

Lammers will be the twelfth Dutch player employed by Rangers. Ronald Waterreus was from 2004 to 2006 the last Dutchman who was active as a player at Ibrox. Giovanni van Bronckhorst was still the manager there quite recently, from November 18, 2021 to November 21, 2022. Earlier, Dick Advocaat was also coach of the Scottish record champion, from June 1998 to December 2001. Lammers will play at Rangers with shirt number 14, which is on Ibrox was previously worn by Ronald de Boer and Steven Naismith.

Lammers was sold by PSV to Atalanta on September 22, 2020 for 8 million euros. At the club from Bergamo he scored only 2 times in 19 appearances. Lammers was rented out for the past three seasons, but was also not exactly successful as a striker at Empoli (1 goal in 14 games), Eintract Frankfurt (2 goals in 22 games) and Sampdoria (1 goal in 20 games). With the club from Genoa, Lammers was even relegated from Serie A this season, with only 19 points from 38 games. At PSV, the left-footed Lammers also scored only six times in 29 matches, after he had shown himself as an easy-scoring striker in the youth and at Jong PSV (30 goals in 63 matches).

“I’m really excited to join Rangers, my first impressions have all been good, so I’m even more excited for the season that starts now. I got in touch with the manager Michael Beale and he came to me in Italy. We had a good chat and he gave me a presentation about the club and how I could fit in. From that moment on I was excited about this project and coming to Glasgow,” Lammers says on the club’s site. “I already knew a few things about Rangers, I know the history, I know it’s a huge club in Scotland and also globally, but it is always good to experience the personal side before signing anywhere.”

42-year-old Englishman Michael Beale has won 22 of 28 games as manager of Rangers since he succeeded Giovanni van Bronckhorst in the World Cup, but Rangers finished this season with 92 points, seven points behind champions Celtic. The Glasgow rivals now have 53 league titles, just two fewer than Rangers. In the 2020/2021 season Rangers became champions with Steven Gerrard as coach, but in eleven of the past two seasons the title has always gone to Celtic. That club recently lost Australian coach Ange Postecoglou to Tottenham Hotspur, where he was appointed after the arrival of Feyenoord coach Arne Slot proved impossible.
