AFC U17 group draw: hosts Thailand in double local duel

Record winner Japan

The four groups of the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2023 were drawn in Bangkok on Thursday. Hosts Thailand, who won their first and last win in 1998, meet two neighboring countries, Malaysia and Laos, in Group A. The group is completed by Yemen. In Group B, South Korea meets Iran, Afghanistan and Qatar. Group C includes reigning runners-up Tajikistan, Australia, Saudi Arabia and China. Group D is led by reigning and record winners of the competition Japan and meets India, Vietnam and Uzbekistan.

Thailand and Laos will kick off this year’s edition on June 15th. For the first time since 2006, the 2023 edition will be held as a U17 tournament instead of the U16 tournament as before. The four semi-finalists automatically qualify for the FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru in November.
