I think today’s generation has no idea how good the classic Aerosmith fabric was. They not only delivered the template for me, but also left their mark on various post-guns-n ‘-roses bands: Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam all bitten a piece from their cake.
My great enlightenment happened when I was 14. I had an older girlfriend who I really wanted to do the laundry; After a long whisper, she finally invited me home. We hung around, smoked pot and heard Aerosmith’s “Rocks”. It hit me like a thunderbill. I only sat there and put the album over and over again – and had long forgotten the girl. And I still remember how I ran my bike back to my grandmother that evening and knew that my life had changed. I had found something I could identify with.
The key to “Rocks” are the first two songs: “Back in the Saddle” and “Last Child”. This left-right combination tore my head away. But my favorite was always “Nobody’s Fault”, the second piece on the B side: they had this aggressive, psychotic, kokest charisma, but at the same time they also had their little stones-like blues thing.
They were so loud that you could hardly identify a grade – and yet it was hellish good
When I learned guitar, Aerosmith gave me the necessary kick in the ass. I identified myself with Joe Perry, musically and visually. He had his own cut, which somehow reminded me of Keith Richards; He was always so wonderfully broken and worked on his guitar with incredible coolness. I was also totally on Brad Whitford’s solos: he had a greater influence on me than most people are well known.
My first Aerosmith concert was in 1978-at a festival with Van Halen: they were so loud that you could hardly identify a note-and yet it was hellish. Shortly afterwards they dissolved what was the end of the 70s rock for me. Six years later, when they came back together, I saw them again – and they were breathtaking. Shortly afterwards, Guns N ‘Roses were asked whether they wanted to appear on the “Permanent Vacation” tour as their opening act. In the hotel room of her manager we ordered for $ 1500 from the room service when he was in the bathroom. And then devastated the room. They must have liked us because they still took us on tour.
