Actors performance Boer Koekoek practice on location for the first time: ‘Quite awkward’

Practice, practice and more practice. In a few weeks it will be that time. Then the actors of theater performance Boer Koekoek can get to work in Hollandscheveld. They are now doing this for the first time with rehearsals on location, where the decor is finished.

Old telephones, furniture, a large stage with instruments and quite a few wooden pallets cover the floor in the Loods. The hall has been transformed into a place where the sixties have come to life again.

Here and there some actors are walking around. “In recent weeks we were still sitting in a loft in Almere, going through texts together,” said actor Marjolein Ley. “So this big place and the beautiful decor can be called impressive.”

“We are in favor of tax reduction, which means that we are against tax increases”, farmer Koekoek became known with these kinds of texts. And soon there will be more about him during the play. The story itself is about farmer Koekoek, the farmers’ revolt in 1963 and how it brought him to the House of Representatives with three seats.

But according to theater maker Tom de Ket, that is not the only thing that emerges during the performance. According to him, it will be one piece in one piece. The actors pretend to be a theater society from Hollandscheveld in the present day. “They’re reenacting the 1960s peasant revolt.”

But that doesn’t always go smoothly. “It soon becomes clear that not all Hollandschevelders agree with each other about how the farmers are treated. That is the basis for conflict.”
