Abuse during youth match VV Ruinerwold: ‘You hope something like this never happens to you’

At VV Ruinerwold, a spectator and a linesman were assaulted yesterday during a youth match against Coevorden. The local police officer said this in an Instagram post, which has now been deleted.

According to the local police officer, there were disturbances between both teams during the match. A spectator wanted to calm the argument and was assaulted by the opposing linesman. The linesman was also allegedly abused. “When the police arrived on the scene, the suspects were already gone,” the police officer said.

Chairman René Tulner confirms the incident. “This has indeed happened among young people, but I will not go into the content of it,” he explains. “A report has been filed and because the police are still investigating, it is not wise to make any statements about this.”

However, he says he is disappointed with the situation. “I have also been in contact with the chairman of the opposing party, we both deeply regret what happened. Football is a wonderful sport, you always hope that something like this does not happen to you,” he sighs.

According to the police officer, the other party is also considering reporting the matter. The police are still going to interview witnesses.
