A spill of more than 200 m³ of palm oil in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda is close to Besòs

The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) stops the spill of about 1,000 cubic meters of cooking oil of a vegetable oil and fat management company in Santa Perpètua de Mogoda (Vallès Occidental) making a speck in the Seca stream to contain and collect the product and prevent it from reaching the Besòs river.

According to the Generalitat Fire Brigade, the lipid leak originated at 11:13 a.m. when a company silo, located on the Ripollet road, broke. The Group of Collapsed Structures of this body has traveled to the place to assess the stability of the silo that suffered the leak. The spill is contained between the municipalities of Santa Perpetua and La Llagosta.

Members of the Mossos d’Esquadra, the Local Police of Santa Perpètua de Mogoda and La Llagosta, Rural Agents, ADF volunteers and workers from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) have worked together to prevent the spill from reaching Besòs and lipid containment and absorption tasks are still being carried out in La Llagosta.

As a preventive measure, the Procicat plan pre-alert and the Santa Perpètua de Mogoda City Council has activated the municipal emergency plan. The consistory has reported through a statement that it is not a toxic product.

The Mossos have opened an investigation to determine the cause of the spill in Santa Perpètua de la Mogoda. Mossos sources have explained to EFE that, although the first indications topoint to an “accidental” cause in this incident, agents of the body will thoroughly investigate the origin given the affectation in the environment.

Civil Protection, for its part, has reported that the spill, which has dyed the water of the stream yellow, is contained between the municipalities of Santa Perpètua and La Llagosta to prevent the oil from reaching the Besòs river. However, according to Rural Agentsno affectation has been detected in the fauna in the inspection that has been done this Saturday morning.
