UNO SMALL ACCIDENT
Type: political-humanistic reflection
Direction: Jafar Panahi. With Vahid Mobasseri, Mariam Afshari, Ebrahim Azizi, Hadis Pakbaten, Majid Panahi, Mohamad Ali Elyasmehr, Delmaz Najafi
As the title says, it is a simple accident that starts the story. The one that forces a man to stop at the mechanic’s and allows Vahid to recognize who had tortured and humiliated him when he was in prisonnot for political reasons but because he had demonstrated against the delay in being paid.
Vahid would like revenge but is not sure if he is the right person and then she asks for help from another ex-prisoner, Shiva, to recognize who she has stunned and locked in the trunk of her van.
A scene from “A simple accident”, Palme d’Or in Cannes.
An identification which then also involves a newlywed couple (she had been in prison) and a fifth former prisoner, Hamid, each of whom reacts differently.
Born from Panahi’s experience in prison, the film marks a turning point in the director’s stylehere freer and capable of blending almost humorous moments into the dramatic structure (the policemen with the Pos for bribes).
Until a very tense and dramatic ending where doubts about recognition find their solution, in a film that is a painful and sincere reflection on how civil society should (or could) react in the face of regime violence. Palme d’Or in Cannes.
For those who want to applaud the courage (and skill) of a true master.
