Many people order false eyelashes from Shein or Temu because of the low price. Anette Kakko, 15, from Espoo, wants to share her experience so that others will think more carefully about ordering. The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes reminds that ordering from outside the EU is the buyer’s own responsibility.

A consumer made an unpleasant discovery about the false eyelashes he ordered from the Shein online store. Iltalehti contacted both the manufacturer of false eyelashes and the European representative of the product. The manufacturer did not comment on the matter.

The product’s EU authorized representative (EC REP European Authorized Representative) says that they have investigated the matter and confirms that the product in question falls within the scope of their authorization. According to the representative, the case is taken seriously.

– We deeply regret what happened and the inconvenience caused to customers. We have reported the matter to the sales platform, which has reacted quickly by removing the product from the store in question and starting an investigation, says the representative.

Tukes: No risk

We sent a picture of the false eyelashes package to Tukes for evaluation, according to which the package seems to have the required manufacturer and identification information.

There are no instructions for use or safety information in the package, but according to the agency, the removable eyelashes can probably be used safely without separate instructions because they do not have a ready-made adhesive surface. The safety of eyelash glue is the responsibility of the glue manufacturer, and its own chemical legislation applies to it.

According to the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency Tukes, the requirements of the cosmetics regulation do not apply to false eyelashes, they are objects. Insects or other impurities are not regulated in the legislation applicable to objects, unlike, for example, cosmetic preparations.

– Since it is not a hygiene product or food, we do not believe that a single insect poses a risk if the product is used for the purpose for which it was designed and manufactured, Tukes group manager Pauli Kärkkäinen tells.
