The railway will take advantage of the holiday season for construction work – this may test the patience of metal fans who want to travel by train to Wacken Open Air at the end of July: Until the end of August, there will be cancellations, detours, and replacement services in long-distance, regional, and S-Bahn traffic.
The festival arrival station is Itzehoe. From there, metal fans will continue with a shuttle bus. However, the journey to the district town of Steinburg will not be as comfortable as usual.
Travelers coming via Hamburg Central Station – which includes those from Berlin, Hanover, or Bremen – will face the hassle of switching trains with their luggage to the S-Bahn to Pinneberg. From there, they can take the regional express to Itzehoe. For some connections, passengers will also have to board a replacement bus to Elmshorn to reach the regional express.
Key Changes Overview
RE6 (Hamburg–Westerland/Sylt): By the end of August, there will be shortened rides, train cancellations, and rail replacement traffic depending on the construction phase.
The RB61 will only operate between Itzehoe and Pinneberg for a period.
The RB71 will only run between Wrist and Elmshorn for part of this time.
From July 22 to August 12, both lines will start and end in Pinneberg.
The RB60 (Itzehoe–Hamburg-Altona) will be completely out of service from July 20 to August 12.
