Southampton are heading for their worst Premier League season in history.
Against that background, however, the team played amazingly well when they arrived as a guest of Manchester United.
Having avoided defeat only four times this league season, Soton perfectly controlled the events of the game at Old Trafford and came close to scraping a valuable away win.
Nothing can save the Saints from relegation anymore, and the biggest tension is now whether United will join them in the Championship next season.
The opening goal of the match was of course a corner kick, and it was scored by the red shirts Manuel Ugarte to his own head. Of course, the Uruguayan could be used more, but he got to safety on the bench already in the 53rd minute.
The United management watched the events with blank faces. Principal owner sir Jim Ratcliffe already got his own mock song from Old Trafford, and the sir sitting next to him Dave Brailsford just hoped the fans wouldn’t pick on him too.
The head coach Ruben Amorim tried with exchanges to rouse his team to fight, but Antony only managed to put the ball in front of the empty goal straight at the Saints keeper Aaron Ramsdale into my arms.
In the end, the 1–1 equalizer was only made easier in the 82nd minute, when the team’s only bright spot Amad Diallo got to try twice. The latter attempt sent the ball into the Soton net.
The home win lifted Manchester United to 12th place in the Premier League. PDO
After that, United frantically searched for the winning goal. Amad was there when Christian Eriksen picked up a perfect Hollywood ball and the Ivorian volleyed it behind Ramsdale’s back for another time.
In extra time, Amad scored the first hat-trick of his career, when the visitors Taylor Harwood-Bellis gifted him the ball in front of an empty net.
The 22-year-old striker was surely the only one from the United camp who could be satisfied with his performance on the night. He scored three goals in 12 minutes and saved his team from a huge disaster in the process.
