Valio’s data breach could lead to identity theft, experts warn Yle.
Security expert Sami Laiho says that Valio’s personnel have lost their privacy. Sami Laiho/ Tivi
Valio said on Friday that a huge data leak has occurred in the company.
According to Valio, the attacker may have gotten hold of the personal IDs and salary information of everyone working in the company in Finland.
Data security expert Sami Laiho says To Ylethat Valio’s employees may become victims of scams and identity theft as a result of the leak.
With the personal ID, you can, for example, continue to take quick tips from some places.
– From the point of view of the employees, this of course means a loss of privacy. Credit bans and trade register bans are needed. It’s quite a hassle, Laiho tells Yle.
Data security expert and professional hacker Benjamin Särkkä estimates together with Laiho that the attack is a so-called “double extortion attack”.
According to experts, it breaks into the target’s system, cripples functions and copies and encrypts files. After this, the company is demanded a ransom and threatened with serious financial harm.
Even if the company doesn’t pay the ransom, the attacker can get hold of the data and can continue the extortion.
– This kind of manufacturing industry is a top victim for an attacker, Laiho says to Yle.
