THEn Japan la Creativity knows no boundaries. After the Crying Bars – places where people go to cry to let off steam – the phenomenon of “grandmothers for hire”. Who wouldn’t pay to enjoy it delicious dishes, listen to theirs valuable advice or be pampered as only they can do? Nobody. The Japanese understood this and created OK! Obaachan (OK! Grandma): a service that allows you to rent grannies for cooking, keeping company and offering emotional support. A solution that responds to two fundamental social needs: fight loneliness And give work opportunities to women over 60.

Grandmothers “for hire”, an antidote to loneliness

Grannies for hire aren’t just master chefs. They tidy up, listen, give advice and give affection. A few hours with a maternal figure by your side are enough to feel less alone, receive comfort and wisdom. Among the most curious requests are moments of emotional support, sharing and confessions; like feeling the need to tell someone a secret or learn how to cook something bento good like your grandmother did. The cost? About 18 euros an hourplus a small travel fee.

A job with a purpose: enhancing women

For many participants, OK! Obaachan it’s more than a job. It’s a way to feeling useful, finding meaning after losses or life changescreate bonds and transmit experience. In Japan, where women over 60 are often excluded from the job market or relegated to precarious jobs, this project enhances traditional skills and abilities otherwise ignore.

An initiative beyond grandmothers

The service is part of The Women-only Handyman in Japana project dedicated to community support and led entirely by women. There are not only grandmothers: they can be “rented” aunts, friends or guidesall figures that offer companionship, daily assistance and emotional support. Small gestures that can transform the lives of those who live isolated.

In a country where the 30% of the population is over 65 years old and loneliness is increasing, OK! Obaachan represents an intelligent and sweet solution. The wisdom of older women becomes a shared treasurewhile those who receive the service find again closeness and affection. An easy way to warm the heart and remember that age is not a limit, but a precious resource.
