Unfairly, the first thing that comes to mind when you think of A Flock Of Seagulls is singer Mike Score’s bizarre hairdo. However, since forming in 1979, the band has become something of a household name. Not everyone has a Pulp Fiction mention on their resume, and her hit song “I Ran” was great fun on La La Land. Formed by Score, his brother and a fellow hairdresser, A Flock Of Seagulls formed the Liverpool branch of synth-pop. They always acted a bit tackier and sweeter than, for example, Depeche Mode, but at the same time were blueprints for other acts like Boytronic. Robots with wind machine sounds and guitar riffs…

Farewell to the New Wave

On the three-CD reissue of their debut album for the 40th anniversary, you can once again convince yourself of their outrageous catchiness. Her biggest hit, “Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)”, is missing here (it only appeared on the follow-up album, “Listen”, but wouldn’t have bothered as a bonus), but her debut single, “(It’s Not Me) Talking “, taken into account. And “A Flock Of Seagulls” already contained several veritable releases like “Telecommunication”, “Modern Love Is Automatic” and the “Space Age Love Song”, which lives up to its title. The somewhat harsh “Standing In The Doorway” and “Tokyo” can be seen as a farewell to New Wave.

Phil Spector was impressed by the “phenomenal” production, and John Peel was also considered a fan of the band. His 1981 session, a year before that debut’s release, stands out with comparatively post-punk versions of “I Ran” and “(It’s Not Me) Talking.” Rounding out this slice of British music history are sessions by Richard Skinner, Janice Long and Kid Jensen, plus live tracks from London’s Paris Theater, proving the Liverpudlians could perform their work live. John Earls conducted a recent interview with Mike Score.
