A 50-year-old journalist died in the stands of a major match

The death of a Polish journalist overshadowed the handball Champions League final.

A Polish journalist died in the press stand during the handball Champions League final in Cologne, Germany.

The final between Germany’s Magdeburg and Poland’s Kielce on Sunday had to be stopped when a reporter stumbled into the stands. The interruption lasted about 13 minutes.

The league confirmed the reporter’s death.

Polish Interia Sport according to it was a 50-year-old Paweł Kotwica. He is said to have lost consciousness and had received immediate first aid.

Kotwica was taken to hospital, where he eventually died.

Kielce posted his condolences to Kotwica’s family on his Twitter account after the match.

Magdeburg won the final in extra time with goals 30–29.
