Adult animation has ceased to be a niche to become one of the most bold and innovative narrative forms in the television industry. Throughout the last decades, we have witnessed the evolution of the environment, with creators who have challenged the limits of the format and have redefined the concept of animation in pop culture.
Irreverence as an engine
“The Simpsons” (Matt Groening, 1989) paved the way for adult animation with his family satire. And then they were “South Park” (Trey Parker and Matt Stone, 1997), “Family Guy” (Seth Macfarlane, 1999) and “Rick and Morty” (Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland, 2013) which raised the level of provocation.

Most recent, anthology “Love, Death & Robots” (David Fincher and Tim Miller, 2019) revolutionized animation with its episodic structure and their commitment to a diversity of visual and narrative styles. Each episode is an experiment in itself, which makes it a reference work for the future of the environment. Initially financed by crowdfunding, the series captures the essence of “Dungeons & Dragons” with an irreverent and epic tone, combining humor, drama and masterly choreographed action sequences.
Finally, “Samurai with blue eyes” (Lean Thomas, 2021) and their second season to come, consolidate the fusion between the aesthetics of the anime and the Western narrative influences. With a fluid animation and a story that combines Western with the Japanese chambara, the series offers a fresh and stylized look at the figure of the Ronin, exploring identity and revenge issues in a fiercely stylized world.
Other superheroes
Robert Kirkman, co-creator of “The Walking Dead”, adapted his own comic in “Invincible” (2021), a series that takes up the essence of superhero stories but breaks them down with a brutality and narrative complexity little seen in the middle.
Unlike other proposals of the genre, “Invincible“It examines the consequences of power and violence with a rawness that has rarely explored in animation. Pursued as a threat and not as a savior, the avatar must discover its origins with its twin brother to save the Seven Havens before the total collapse.
Michael Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, creators of the franchise, are behind the project. “We never imagined that we would be expanding this universe decades later. This new story is full of fantasy, mystery and incredible characters. Prepare for another epic and emotional adventure,” they said in a statement. In addition, an animated film on AANG will be released in 2026, new YouTube content and commemorative events in Comic-Con.
