“In the third sentence I thought it was over when he opened it”said Fils, “But I’m very happy with my performance.”

Solid start of Zverev

Alexander Zverev started his match very seriously against the Frenchman set to number 17. Both brought through their serve games – until the German succeeded in 5: 3. The set win was then only a matter of form.

Although Fils could be treated in the break after the first round of physiotherapy, at the beginning of the second round, three game gains in the meantime came to 3: 0. Fils risked significantly more, his opponent lost a little thread. In this phase, Zverev did not seem to put great energy to catch up with the backlog, but set sentence two with 3: 6.

Sentence 3: More concentration, but no consistency

After the set loss, the “long” German acted again with significantly more concentration. In the match -shaped match, the not too numerous spectators saw a Zverev, which built up a lot of pressure from behind. This quickly became apparent when Fils lost his second service in this decisive sentence after a clear resistance: Zverev had found back to old strength.

But Fils did not give up: First he managed the re-break, then he placed 3: 3. Now the 20 -year -old Frenchman had a run. He gets significantly more “Winner”. At 3: 5, Zverev struck the match loss – and he fought.

With two aces he got his service game. But after that was over. Zverev made more and more mistakes, Fils confidently brought his impact game and is in the quarter -finals of Miami.

Jump to the top of the world is difficult

After the lost final in Melbourne, Zverev collected bitter defeats in Buenos Aires, Rio de Janeiro and Acapulco. At the Masters event in Indian Wells in early March, he had recently left the start.

In the absence of Jannik Sinner, who is still closed until May 4 because of his positive doping test from 2024, Zverev has set itself the goal of jumping to the top of the world rankings.
