In an interview about his initial skepticism, Conleth Hill, known as Lord Varys in “Game of Thrones”, spoke in an interview to become part of the epic fantasy world.

“I was against it for a long time – I just don’t like magicians,” said Hill about his reaction to the first offer.

According to his own statement, the actor, who embodied the master of the intrigue in the HBO series, had concerns about the genre. But a moving moment in the script changed everything.

An emotional scene convinced him

The decisive factor for his promise was a scene between Varys and Tyrion Lannister (played by Peter Dinklage), in which Varys tells of his traumatic childhood. This profoundness finally convinced Hill that it was not an ordinary fantasy series.

“It was not a typical casting. You wanted to deal with the language-actors with Shakespeare experience,” said Hill.

Varys: The string puller of Westeros

In the series, Varys was one of the most mysterious characters. Through a network of spies, it exerted massive influence. He served several kings, including Robert and Joffrey Baratheon, allied himself with Tyrion Lannister and ultimately fell victim to Daenerys Targaryen.

Spin-offs, films & games: The “Game of Thrones” world continues to grow

The original series (2011-2019) is based on George RR Martin’s series of novels “The Song of Eis und Feuer” and is one of the most successful HBO productions of all time. The prequel “House of the Dragon” was already in the second season – with mostly positive reviews.

For 2025, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” has announced another spin-off, which, according to Martin, should be less action-packed, but should be narratively strong.

The gaming world is also expanded: “With Game of Thrones: Kingsroad” a video game with Jon Snow, played by Kit Harington, will be released this year. In addition, there is a cinema film in the early stage of development, and there is indications that Maisie Williams could return to Arya.
