The goalkeeper casting at the DFB women has an end. On Tuesday, national coach Christian Wück announced who he will set at the European Championship in summer.

National coach Christian Wück has committed: Ann-Katrin Berger will be number one in the goal of the German footballers at the European Championship in summer. This announced Wück on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old, who is under contract with the US Club Gotham FC, receives preference to her younger competitors. At the Olympic Games in Paris last year, Berger had made a significant contribution to winning the bronze medal.

In addition to Berger, Wück also called Stina Johannes (25/Eintracht Frankfurt) and Rafaela Borggräfe (25/SC Freiburg) for the upcoming course.

Berger will “get playing time from now on to get security,” said the national coach. Already in February he informed the goalkeeper about his decision. The choice was based on her experience, said Wück and emphasized: “It radiates the security for which the young goalkeepers may need a little longer”. He hoped that Berger can “continue the path she started at the Olympics at which the European Championships”.

So far, Wück had left the race for number one open and had given all goalkeepers. Everyone would have shown good, but “not 100 percent error -free” services, said the national coach.

Before the European Championship in Switzerland (July 2 to 27), Berger will initially be in goal in the National League games against Scotland: on April 4 in Dundee (8:35 p.m./ZDF) and on April 8 in Wolfsburg (5.45 p.m./ARD). The team meets on Monday in Frankfurt/Main.

Wück’s predecessor Horst Hrubesch had made Berger the goalkeeper just before the Olympic Games. In the course of the tournament, she was elected celebrated Olympic heroine and later the footballer of 2024.

Sophia Winkler from SGS Essen also originally belonged to the group of European Championship candidates, but failed because of a serious knee injury. Ena Mahmutovic (21/Bayern Munich) was nominated for the upcoming games on demand because it is in use in the U23.
