It was the goal that the Italians “really hurt” as coach Spalletti put it. It was so much employed by the 66-year-old half an hour after the game that he addressed it several times.
“The second goal we collected was incredible. It was easy to prevent. You can collect a goal, but not in this way,” he said at the beginning of the press conference. A few minutes later he came back to it.
“Germany played better than in the first leg. Our goal was to survive the first 20 minutes and then do what we did in the second half. What really hurt us was the second goal,” said Spalletti.
And it didn’t take long for it to speak to another question again. “I am always on the side of the players and like to defend them,” he said again. But: “This is not possible with this corner kick. It doesn’t work at all.”
It worked in Spalletti, who would have felt it deserved if his team had been rewarded with the 4: 3 to reach the extension. But his team had installed too much in the first round. Now the journey of Italy is over in the Nations League in the quarter -finals. The World Cup qualification continues in June. Italy has to go to Norway directly at the start. A difficult challenge. But at least one thing should be clear: Spalletti’s men against Erling Haaland and Co. are better careful with corner balls.
