The buildings on the former municipal workshop in Westerbork are being demolished. Five years ago the municipal yard was last used.

“Because the buildings have been vacant for some time, everything is falling into disrepair and it is time to demolish the buildings and finish the site flat,” says the municipality of Midden-Drenthe. “The vacant buildings also attract hanging youth and various reports of vandalism have been received.”

In 2020 it was concluded that it was no longer possible to work safely and healthily in Westerbork, the work was moved to Beilen. The location on Zandhoeklaan has since been mentioned as a location for housing, but that never happened. The soil is still too contaminated. That is also the reason that for the time being only work is being done above ground. The remediation of the soil comes at a later time.

A demolition plan has been worked on recently. It states, among other things, that a protected barn owl and two forest owls have the chance to move to a nest box, now they are still nesting in a demolition building.
