The Social Democratic Coalition party Movementu Futuro Kòrsou (MFK) has won the parliamentary elections in Curaçao as expected. The party won 13 of the 21 seats, so Was announced on Saturday morning. With this, MFK has an absolute majority in parliament, with which it can rule alone in the coming years.
Never before has a party in Curaçao achieved such a large majority as MFK now achieved. According to local media, the party will quickly start with a ministerial team to rule alone. “We will continue with our work and we can say that there will be four years of progress,” responded party leader and the previous Prime Minister Gilmar ‘Pik’ Pisas.
MFK formed a coalition for three and a half years with the Christian-Democratic PNP, which now won four seats. That is just as many as in the previous elections in 2021. The liberal par halved the seat number from four to two. On Friday, more than 68 percent of voters cast a vote, while four years ago it was 74 percent.
Economy
MFK also achieved a major election victory in the previous elections. The Pisas party then received nine seats, the highest number for a party on the island in thirty years. In the coalition with the PNP, the most important goal was to pull the island out of the economic crisis, which had ended up in the Coronapandemie.
Under the leadership of Pisas, the economy grew strongly, thanks in part to the improving tourism. Pisas states that this growth is due to his policy choices, but critics question that claim. They think that the economic recovery is only a logical consequence of the loss of corona measures.
In May 2024, the Pisas cabinet fell after a fight between MFK and PNP. Two PNP party members had openly questioned the reliability of Javier Silvania (MFK), the Minister of Finance. MFK then no longer decided to work with the two PNP members, after which PNP pulled the plug from the coalition.
