Malick Thiaw already played some caps for Germany. But another association tries to lure him.
The Senegal apparently tries intensively for Malick Thiaw. As the Pay TV broadcaster Sky reports, the African association wants to win the central defender of AC Milan for its national team.
Despite convincing achievements at his Italian club, Thiaw was again not nominated for the German national team by national coach Julian Nagelsmann. According to Sky, even Milan advisor Zlatan Ibrahimović is surprised that the defender has not found any place for the recent squadramination for the National League quarter-finals against Italy.
So far, Thiaw has been running three times for the DFB team, but these were not competitive games. As a result, the 23-year-old could still choose another national team. However, Nagelsmann explained that the ex-Schalker continues to play a role in his planning.
The national coach said: “Malick is a very young, talented player. He has good phases. We currently have many good players for this position.” There is currently not enough space in the squad to add three to four new players. During the upcoming international break, Nagelsmann would like to take a closer look at Yann Bisseck from Inter Milan, which he nominated for the first time. “Yann Bisseck wasn’t there yet, Malick,” said Nagelsmann.
The Senegal had recently invited Thiaw for the games in March, but the defender declined. According to Sky, the 23-year-old continues to focus on a future in the German national team and therefore remains calm. His last use for the DFB team was on October 18, 2023 in 2-2 against Mexico.
With a change to Senegal, Thiaw could increase his chances of participating in the World Cup in 2026. The team is one of the best nations in Africa. In addition to Germany and Senegal, Thiaw could also play for Finland. His father comes from Senegal, his mother is Finn. The defender was born in Düsseldorf, and he received German citizenship in spring 2021 by naturalization.
