The former heavyweight world champion George Foreman is dead. The boxer died at the age of 76.
The former heavyweight boxing world champion George Foreman is dead. As his family announced on Saturday, the 76-year-old died on Friday “with his loved ones”. Foreman is known for his defeat against Muhammad Ali in 1974 and his fulminant comeback as the oldest heavyweight trees in history 20 years later.
Foreman was an outstanding heavyweight boxer, entrepreneur and preacher. He grew up in modest conditions and found a way to escape his difficult environment in boxing. His talent initially led him to an impressive amateur career, which was crowned with winning the gold medal in heavyweight gold medal at the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City.
His transition to the profile warehouse was also successful. In 1973 he secured the world championship title with a spectacular victory over Joe Frazier. A year later he faced Muhammad Ali in the legendary “Rumble in the Jungle”, a struggle that was one of the most important in boxing history. After a temporary return to boxing in 1987, Foreman wrote history again when he won the world championship title again in 1994 at the age of 45 and thus became the oldest heavyweight world champion. Foreman defended the belt in 1995 with a highly controversial victory against Axel Schulz. In 1997 he finally ended his career.
After his first resignation in 1977, Foreman devoted himself to the Christian faith and became a preacher. He founded the George Foreman Youth and Community Center in Houston to help disadvantaged young people. In addition to his religious activity, he was also known as an entrepreneur, in particular by the George Foreman Grill, of which over 100 million copies were sold.
Foreman leaves his wife Mary Joan Martelly, with whom he had been married since 1985, and twelve children. His five sons all bear his name, a sign of his deep connection to the family.
