Toby Alderweireld has to accept a heavy damper in the last months before his end of his career. The 36 -year -old captain of Royal Antwerp suffered a tear of the quadriceps on Sunday 0-0 in Liège on Sunday, as the club announced. Now it is unclear whether the captain will appear again for the RAFC. It is always his goal.

“What I know is that I will do everything to wear this beautiful jersey again. The association did not provide any precise information on the downtime, but announced that the recovery of such a injury would usually take “a lot of time”. A participation of Alderweireld in the championship round, for which Antwerp qualified as fifth, is questionable. The regular season of the Jupiler Pro League has ended since last weekend. After the international break, the playoffs continue, which end on May 25th.

Alderweireld announced his end of his career for the summer in November. Then his contract expires. “Sometimes I look forward to my retirement, but at the same time I also have a lot of ambition to accelerate with Antwerp.

The Belgian took his first steps in professional football in the Netherlands at Ajax, for which he was 186 times. Even more often he was only for Tottenham Hotspur on the square with 236 missions – where he also reached his highest market value with 40 million euros. Other stations led him to Atlético Madrid, FC Southampton and Al-Duhail SC to Qatar, before he first signed in his home country at a professional club in 2022. Since then he has played 132 games for Antwerp and won the Belgian Double in 2023.
