Leverkusen turns a 1: 3 deficit in Stuttgart and celebrates an extremely important victory after a goal in added time. This melts the distance from Bavaria.
Thanks to great morals, a furious catch -up and later goals, Bayer Leverkusen shortened the gap to leaders FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga to six points. Attacker Patrik Schick shot the master at the end of the 26th match day at VfB Stuttgart in added time after 1: 3 deficit to 4: 3 (0: 1) victory and had the Werkelf cheered. Xabi Alonso ran completely unleashed on the lawn, his professionals were celebrated happily and proudly in the fan curve.
Ermedin Demirović (15th minute) and Nick Woltemade (48th) met in front of 59,000 spectators for VfB, who remained winning without winning for the fifth time. Bayer’s Granit Xhaka also undertook an own goal (62nd). The goals for Leverkusen first scored Jeremie Frimpong (56.) and Piero Hincapié (68.). Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller hit his own network (88th) before Schick was still turning the game completely (90.+4). After the clear and deserved Champions League off to Bayern Munich, it was a remarkable reaction from the Leverkusen.
“The air is not out. We didn’t give up and believed it until the end. Maybe sometimes it takes just such victories to show that the spirit is still there,” said defender Jonathan Tah.
In a largely balanced first half, the Leverkuseners only allowed two real chances – but the first of which was directly in it. After a courageous start of Stuttgart Maximilian Mittelstädt, who previously prevailed against his national team colleague Jonathan Tah, Bayer keeper Lukáš Hrádecký initially parried a shot from Jamie Leweling. However, he was powerless against Demirović’s dusting Demirović from a short distance.
The Stuttgarters, in which the shaped national players Deniz Undav and Chris Lieichich first sat outside, sometimes afforded inaccuracies. In total, however, they stood quite safe and looked more grippy.
A shot from center forward Schick remained the only chance of the guests before the break (21st). The injured offensive star Florian Wirtz, who can also cause a special moment and danger from nowhere, were noticeable to the Leverkuseners.
In the added time of the first half, VfB almost increased. Enzo Millot opened in front of Hrádecký, but did not bring the ball past the goalkeeper. Hincapié (45.+1) blocked the margin of midfielder Stiller.
Bayer started the second half. After only three minutes, the defense defense, which had to help out as a central defender, was once again fully undermined with a simple pass. Millot sent Woltemade, who stayed very cool in the duel with Hradecky and hit the left corner with a low shot to 2-0.
Leverkusen’s answer was not long in coming. Frimpong was lucky that the ball fell in front of his feet – he met for the connection. The subsequent own goal of Xhaka, whom a shot parried by Hrádecký jumped on the arm and from there into the goal, made the supposed preliminary decision.
But the double winner did not give up with a two-goal deficit and then shortened Hincapie’s powerful hit to 2: 3. Stiller’s own goal actually seemed to be the end of the end, but then striker came chic and crowned an insight with the winning goal in added time.
