Borussia Dortmund seems untrainable this season – Niko Kovac is also available at BVB after a short time, and the media is already speculating in the summer. Lothar Matthäus thought this was a mistake.
“I think Niko Kovac can do it. No matter what happens this season,” said Lothar Matthäus at “Sky 90 – The Football Talk” one day after Dortmund 0: 2 defeat at RB Leipzig.
“You can’t change the coach every six months, you should give Niko the chance – even if things don’t go in the Bundesliga as you want – simply to continue with a targeted preparation,” the record national player continued.
Kovac had only taken over the coaching position at BVB from Nuri Sahin in early February. While the Croats led the black and yellow to the quarter-finals of the Champions League, six BVB victories from six Bundesliga games under Kovac are lost, four games were lost.
In the Bundesliga table, BVB takes a place in terms of the club requirements after 26 match days. The Dortmunders lack seven points for international business, and the gap to Champions League rank four is even ten points.
BVB: Kovac denies out throwing clause vigorously
Matthew considers the qualification to be feasible for Europe or the Conference League, although even the latter “is very far away at the moment”. The BVB had to show the performance from the second half against Leipzig, when the team played out every chance of opportunities.
“They can do something: they have quality in the team, they have speed, they have a striker and a good goalkeeper,” said the 63-year-old.
In its Wednesday edition, the “Sport Bild” reported that the Dortmunders had secured a clause in order to be able to separate from Kovac in the coming summer. The sports magazine calls this possibility “fire clause”. It was said that whether you make use of this option is dependent on the results of the coming week.
According to “Sky”, on the other hand, there is no classic clause in Kovacs until 2026. If BVB fires it in summer, a severance payment of three million euros would be due, the Pay TV station reports.
Kovac himself had denied the existence of a discharge clause at the weekend. “You speculate a lot. Maybe I should show you the contract. There is nothing in it,” he became clear with a view to the latest media reports.
