Joep Wennemars has created a large stunt by conquering the world title in the 1,000 meters at the World Championship distances in Hamar. The 22-year-old skater with 1.08.05 Jenning De Boo and title defender Jordan Stolz from the United States. The Boo grabbed the silver in 1.08.21, Stolz the bronze with 1.08.26.

For Wennemars it is his first medal at a World Cup. The Boo won the 500 meters a day before by beating Stolz. In the seventh ride, Wennemars was the first to dive under the track record of 1.08.16 of Olympic champion Thomas Krol.

Kjeld Nuis then had to bite the pain of his foot injury at the start and was behind Cooper McLeod, the winner of bronze in the 500 meters. He got stuck at 1.08.98. That was good for the seventh time.

The Boo was gone faster than Ning Zhongyan, but after a difficult intersection that the Chinese had to let him go for, stuck at a time above those of Wennemars.

Stolz had a slower opening and first round than Wennemars and seemed to be fighting back in the final round. The American who won the 1,000 meters in the last two World Cups, was unable to make up for the backlog at Wennemars and also ended behind the Boo. (ANP)
