Laura Dahlmeier was extremely successful as a biathlete. After her career end, she devoted herself to the next sport – this has a high risk. A ZDF documentary gives insights.
Laura Dahlmeier has achieved everything as a biathlete. She is a two -time Olympic champion (sprint and persecution 2018 in Pyeongchang) and also became world champion seven times. After her career end in 2019, she devoted herself to new challenges and found her love for mountaineering. She has been a state-certified mountain and ski guide since last year. ZDF has published a documentary about the passion of the 31-year-old. This is entitled: “Laura Dahlmeier and the intoxication of the height-her life after the biathlon career”.
Dahlmeier was accompanied in the mountains for the documentary. In addition to herself, companions also have their say. Among other things, her mother Susi Dahlmeier, who explains: “Laura has always known what she likes and what she doesn’t like. And if she wanted something: Insanely ambitious and determined.” Dahlmeier himself explains in the documentary why she ended her career so early and explains that she felt the “biathlon circus” as very “rigid”, but she herself loved the variety and therefore went new ways.
She feels comfortable in the mountains. But she also knows about the risk of mountaineering. This is also illustrated by a friend who appears in the documentary: Veronika Schirmer. She says when she is sitting in a café with the former exceptional biathlete: “It is simply a risk sport, and at some point the statistics strike, but I just trust her what she is doing there. I generally trust everyone in mountain sports.
Schirmer’s brother was Robert Grasegger. He died in an avalanche accident in the mountains in Patagonia. According to media reports, his then girlfriend, a 28-year-old Austrian, survived the accident. Schirmer: “I am relatively fine with it, that was on January 6, 2022. I get along with it now. But of course it is not easy, neither for Laura nor for me.”
Dahlmeier and Schirmer meet regularly. The former biathlete says about her friend: “She studied medicine, has children at home, i.e. completely different stages of life. But that is also very important that you have a different perspective.”
