During a co -science in 2020, a surgeon said in the presence of the co -assistant of Moroccan descent that he hates Moroccans. In addition, other surgeons have made racist comments about patients. When a Somali patient was admitted, one of them would have said that “a refugee boat had been washed up.”

The college called on a research agency that had discussions with employees and it is likely that these comments were made. The college finds it ‘very bad that in the presence of co -assistants, who are the doctors of the future, are talked about in such a way about patients’. The college charges the OLVG.

No place for discrimination and racism

The hospital responds to the reprimand: “This cannot and may not happen. We are a hospital where the entire city comes together and everyone is welcome,” says chairman of the board Wietske Vrijland. “That applies to our patients and to everyone who works here. There is absolutely no place in OLVG for discrimination and racism.”

According to the college, the hospital has acted adequately after the complaint: concerned surgeons were approached for their behavior and were sanctions. The hospital has also developed an app where employees can report undesirable behavior. For the medical training, safety is now also tested every year. That is why there are no further sanctions for the OLVG from the College for Human Rights.
