The IOC extends the contract for US media rights by 2036. Thomas Bach describes this as “groundbreaking”.
NBCuniversal has been reporting from the Olympic arenas for two decades – and that won’t change so quickly. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has now extended the contract with the US media company until 2036. The new agreement includes the Winter Games 2034 in Salt Lake City and the 20036 summer games that have not yet been awarded, as it was said in a message.
The existing contract for the US media rights, which ran by 2032 anyway, has been expanded accordingly. With a volume of $ 3 billion (around 2.8 billion euros), the new contract “contributes significantly to the long-term financial stabilization of the Olympic movement,” it said. A sum of $ 7.75 billion (7.2 billion euros) has been agreed for the period from 2021 to 2032.
IOC President Thomas Bach, who will resign in summer, described the contract as “groundbreaking”. NBCuniversal, which has had American TV rights at all Olympic Games since 2004, is also said to become a “strategic partner” of the IOC. Common projects and initiatives are planned to further deepen the cooperation. The final signing is scheduled to take place in June-on March 20, a new IOC president and successor to Bach will be elected.
