The best and most beautiful ice cream in the Netherlands is the ‘Caramello Doratoen’ of the Eindhoven ice cream parlor Bastani. During the IJsvak match, Tim Palm managed to win the first prize with this special ice cream creation of caramel and coffee flavor. It was the first time he participated and so Tim is extra proud of the win. “At the moment itself my hands were shaking so much. There are also so many people watching my fingers.”

During the IJsvak match in Gorinchem, ice cream makers compete against each other this week. There were two prizes to be won. The golden ice cream creation for the best composition of ice cream and the golden ice spatula for the tastiest ice cream. This week Tim managed to win the golden ice cream creation. “The first time you participate, you don’t expect you to be first. We were a bit speechless,” says Tim during the radio program Afslag Zuid.

Ice cream parlor Bastani has been a household name in Eindhoven for years and Tim does not all do that on his own. He works with his father Wilbert in the ice cream parlor. “My father was in the jury for a while, but he never wanted to participate in the competition,” says Tim.

“The first place, that chance is small.”

In contrast to his father, Tim decided to participate. His father didn’t think that was a bad idea and decided to fully support him. “He went for the full hundred percent. The first place, that chance is small. Yet he does it,” says father Wilbert proudly.

Every ice cream maker can participate in the ice competition. During the final there is a fight for the first, second and third place. The taste of the ice is announced in advance. “You have to hand in this ice flavor to the preliminaries. The best twenty are selected there and they have to run ice again during the game,” Wilbert explains.

During the competition, the ice makers on the spot have to make four courtes in six minutes. And that caused Tim for the necessary stress. “I slept badly for a few nights to be very honest. At the moment my hands were shaking. I am not used to that at all. I did not get it under control and in the background you always hear how many minutes you still have.”

Despite the nerves, Tim managed to make the best creation. “There had to be a ball of caramel because that was this year’s theme. I wondered what is nice there. I am quite a coffee lover myself so there had to be a scoop of coffee.”

In addition, Tim has brought out a special asset for his ice cream creation. “We have ice macarons in our ice cream parlor. We make this all ourselves. Everyone knows the normal macarons, but we have made them a little bigger and we do ice cream in between. That is so good. So I added an ice macaron of chocolate.” And that was a smart move by Tim, because his ice cream creation was declared the best in the Netherlands.
